Walking in with a backpack and hiking boots, I was prepared to be fussed over or lectured to be careful not to knock stuff over. However, the owner is really nice and didn’t treat me any differently to the well-dressed people who were on their way out. After a few minutes we were chatting about music and movies. I was not expecting to buy anything in there but couldn’t resist a tiny package of coloring pencils. There were also quite a few really interesting or beautiful items that give a sense of history of the place – like some vintage menus with beautiful artwork.
I’m giving Pagoda 4/5 “green stars” for social and environmental responsibility. Most of the items in her store come from homes around the island – estate sales and so on. Not everything is Hawaiian – there’s quite a lot of Japanese and also some Chinese items – but I believe the majority of it comes from people who have lived locally (and of course there’s a long history of Japanese and Chinese cultures here). Anyway, the point being that when you consider the social and environmental impact of items you purchase, you can’t get much better than pre-owned items!
