Terrific scenery and beaches on the north side of the island.
Ages ago I saw scenes of a gorgeous Beach featured in the 1958 movie, South Pacific. Years later on my 1st visit to Kauai we talked with locals and got the name and directions. As we approached the Eastern end of this mile long Beach there were cars parked along the edge of the road in the dirt and, although there was no signage, and you could not see the shoreline for the trees, we felt this was the place. 25 annual visits later we still
follow the muddy dirt trail that meanders down a steep hill side and only when you emerge from the overhanging branches do you get your first eye popping glimpse of Lumahai. There is no drinking water, no life guards or 1st aid, no restrooms; just an incredible stretch of seemingly untouched, pristine, sun-drenched sand, rock, and water that is truly spectacular. As beautiful and inviting as it is, please be aware that many people here, have fallen victim to the powerful waves and strong undertows, especially in winter months. Whoever the authority is, that chose not to "improve" the East end of this National Treasure, a grateful Mahalo to you!
One of the most amazing beaches on the island. Short hike, stunning views, pristine water, cliff diving ...you name it.......and bonus ...barely anyone there.
Great beach for everything. swimming in the river area where you park, with a rope swing. chilly water but worth it. Tip: there is an easy way up to the right of the swing where you can step up on rocks rather than climb the roots of the tree. watch surfers and take beautiful pictures!
My favorite Kauai beach. Have it to yourself a lot of times. Lots of sand, big beach. Not the greatest swimming unless it's super calm and summer time.
