This is a challenging hike and a great workout. The views are fantastic. I do not recommend this hike if you have a fear of heights. I could not make it to the chin, but my husband did and his photos are amazing so if you can, go to the top called the chin. Be careful, early in the morning is a bit slick in the mud but later is too warm. The parking is limited so get there early!
My husband and I hiked to the top on our first day in Kauai. We absolutely loved it. The "rock climbing" part isn't bad at all. Make sure to stay on the main trail, there are some narrower trails that can be misleading. This hike can be very steep and muddy at times. It took us about 3 hours to get up and down with multiple stops for photos and a break at the top. I'd recommend waterproof hiking boots over any kind of sandal but I saw people hiking it barefoot or in flip flop (she slipped and fell). Use caution with your footing. It's just going to get muddier and and you will likely reach a point where you have no choice but to get your shoes muddy and wet so no need to waste time trying to avoid the mud at first. The view from the top of breathtaking and totally worth it!
Great hike if you are in the area. Gives some good views of the surrounding area. Not very technical if you're only going to the picnic table. You do have to scramble up some rocks if you want to go to the now (highly recommend you do the views are worth it). Make sure you bring good shoes and lots of water it can get pretty hot!
My daughter and I hiked one of the three trails to the top. 2 mile hike. Tools us two hours because of all the stops. We lived it. Highly recommend. When we went it was dry for a few day. However, this trail could be quit muddy after or during a rain shower. Good shoes highly recommended.
We had a hard time finding the trailhead but are really glad we persevered! It is on 581 and there is a small sign (which we missed 3 times) and a yellow metal gate. If and when you find it, you climb up steeply for 1.5 miles. You are rewarded mightily at the top. The downhill goes much quicker!
