Never pay for a tour guide! Rent your own 2 man canoe and put them on your cars! This place is a blast! A waterfall at the top of the river. Turn. Right and go until you can't go any farther. Then park your canoe on the left side and follow the trail up to the waterfall!
Thrilling views, easy access and good roads make it a great, and a must, destination for anyone visiting Kawai. I was told you had to leave early to get parking, but that was not the case. Everywhere we went we were able to stop, look and take pictures. The valleys and waterfalls were amazing. I even went off road with a four wheel drive Jeep - that experience was a little bit hairy with the rain making the mud very slippery but what an adventure.
A barista suggested we hike to the river on our recent trip to the Waimea Canyon. The hike was pretty vertical and coming from mountain country it was strange to go downhill first, but we were lucky to get dry trails and really enjoyed the views on this hike. It was a little rough on my knees after 2 miles, so we didn't makes it all the way to the bottom, but really enjoyed it. Make sure your boots have good tread; I was silly to think a dry trail wouldn't require boots, but it was rather slick with lots of loose dirt and I slid around. Coming up was easier for me!
I like our tour. Nice river. The "Fern grotto" was small and a bit of a let down. Nice to be out in the lush Hawaii.
Home to Smith's Boat and Luau. Gateway to the beautiful Fern Groto. A place to launch your kayak and enjoy the serenity of the Wailua River whilst under the watchful eye of Puni, the sleeping giant.
